The Cuban missile crisis was in the fall of 1962. It was also the closest the United States has ever come to war. This event was very important in history because there had to be significant leadership during this time. The president at this time John f Kennedy had to maintain a clear mind and he had to keep calm . I am glad that the problem between the U.S. and the U.S.S.R. were resolved, and now I will tell you how. There were many causes of this crisis. One of the causes was there was a major tension between Russia and the United States. One other cause was Fidel Castro taking over Cuba, the U.S. felt threatened because it was right next to America. The Bay of Pigs was also another cause. The Bay of Pigs was when the CIA funded anti-Castro exiles to invade Cuba; it was a failed mission and an embarrassment to the U.S. As the U.S. monitored the shipping activity to Cuba, rumors began to spread in Washington. On August 10, 1962 the director of the CIA, sent the president a memorandum indicating his belief that the Russians would place medium-range ballistic missiles in Cuba. When Kennedy heard of this on October 4he told congress and the public that Cuba had defensive missiles and not offensive ones. Then on October 9 he ordered another u-2 flight over Cuba. After analyzing the pictures from the flight, they found what they thought were more s missile sites. They immediately had to inform the president. This left the president and his assistants many decisions to make. The president adnexa-COMM met to discuss his speeches being made. It was necessary that he return and discuss with EX-COMM the two options: an air strike or quarantine. The President agreed he canceled his trip by saying that he had cold.
