PLOT ANALYSIS The first two minutes of “The Crush” (directed by Michael Creagh) give us an exposition of the film: the strong and serious crush that eight-year-old Ardal Travis has on his teacher- Miss Purdy. The film’s plot is presented in a chronological order and begins with the rising action: Ardal gives Miss Purdy a toy engagement ring to expresses his feelings for her. He even writes in his ten-year-planner: “Marry Miss Purdy”. Later, while shopping with his mother, he runs into Miss Purdy and the little boy’s heart is broken when she introduces her fiancé Pierce and shows off her engagement ring. The complication in the rising action gets further when Ardal encounters Pierce impatiently waiting for Miss Purdy outside of the school. Ardal tells Pierce not to marry Miss Purdy then challenges him to a duel to death and jokingly, he accepts the challenge. When Ardal and Pierce meet the next day at the school backyard, the conflict of the film fully emerges. While Pierce doesn’t bring anything along, Ardal pulls out a gun that he takes from his father’s closet. At first Pierce believes it is only a toy gun but Ardal keeps insisting that the gun is real and refuses to back down even when Miss Purdy tries to intervene. Frightened by Ardal’s attitude, Pierce says that he never wanted to marry Miss Purdy and begs for his life. The plot reaches its climax when Ardal shoots Pierce. The conflict is resolved with the falling action: it turns out that Ardal’s gun really is a toy and Miss Purdy angrily breaks up with Pierce. The internal conflict- Ardal’s feelings for Miss Purdy is also resovled when he tells Miss Purdy that he doesn’t deserve to marry her either because he can’t cater to all her needs.
