They realize their mistake, and redeem themselves for what they have done. John Proctor is a tragic hero because he has a tragic flaw, he realizes his mistake, and he redeems himself for what he has done by giving his life. Proctor was a well-respected man across the community. He was a man of virtue. Everyone in Salem looked up to him.
In Arthur Miller’s The Crucible, Sometimes it takes a certain situation or problem to occur in life, that makes an individual realize what really matters in life. A man who was completely innocent, offered himself as a sacrifice for the good of others and their loved ones. There is nothing in the world so wonderful as to love and be loved; there is nothing as devastating as losing a loved one. A relationship that has turned sour is very difficult, both emotionally and mentally. A failing relationship can take away the energy to move forward in life.
McCarthy shows that by the man staying true to himself and his morals, he is able to overcome immoral opponents that were personified as being selfish, through acts of cannibalism. The man dedicates his time being to protect and love for the boy
We know this because he began to 'cry with fright' and he knows that he has done ‘a bad-thing’ because he is aware that he has done a bad thing; this enlightens the readers that when Lennie senses danger, he feels threatened and becomes very dangerous. In section six, Lennie dies happily, knowning that George was never mad at him, despite his urge and love for soft things, he is still appreciated by the readers and we also discover how Lennie is a significant character because without him there is no dream. Father Barry is considered a hero for fulfilling his role as a priest and helping the corrupted community. The longshoremen are heroes for fighting back the corrupted union. Terry Malloy is a hero for telling the truth at the court. However, the overall true hero is Edie Doyle who is the instigator for everyone’s change of heart. Father Barry who is seen as the catalyst in the film is a hero but not the ultimate true hero.
The actions of both Baba and Amir are destructive but ultimately, the reader sees the good in Amir whereas Baba fails to atone. Thus Baba’s deeds are shown by Hosseini to be more detrimental to those around him than that of his illegitimate son. Kite runner highlights how Baba’s choices are not only damaging towards the people around him, but to Afghanistan as a whole. Baba presents himself as a “black and white” man as he lives the moral code that “there is only one sin….theft”. At the start, Baba is viewed by the community as a patriarch, however as the novel unfolds, the reader sees the many flaws in his character and the hypocrisy of his philosophy through his interactions with others.
Aside from Father Barry, characters Edie Doyle and Charlie Malloy also assist Terry throughout his journey to redemption and help him do what is right. Despite the help and support received from these characters, Terry’s journey to redemption is also visibly hampered by the corrupt Johnny Friendly and his men. Throughout his journey to redemption, Terry receives a vast amount of support from Father Barry. Father Barry has not only been of great assistance to Terry, but to the other longshoremen as well. His idea of encouraging the longshoremen to tell the truth and leave behind the ‘D and D’ concept had great effects, most visibly on Terry.
Terry’s relationships with the people in his life such as his brother Charley, Edie and Father Barry, help him to realise that Johnny Friendly’s practices are unjust and that Terry’s conscience was right all along. The love he receives from Edie encourages Terry to stand up and challenge. However, it is not just love that transforms Terry into a leader. Terry’s motivation to change his mind and eventually speak the truth is the result of a shift in his conscience which was sparked by the confidence he gained from Edie’s love and support, the influence of Father Barry and the love he had for his brother Charley. Edie’s love and kindness towards Terry encouraged him to see life differently without death and violence.
These two men show the qualities of friendship by being honest and loyal to each other. No matter what the situation is their friendship always comes first, even though they have a little greed within them, they do not let it control them. He thinks that “golds a devilish sort of thing” and not used for much but, it ruins a lot of friendships. Howard shows his selflessness when he goes to help the little boy Indian boy at the camp, not knowing what may happen to him while he is gone. He thinks about the boy instead of himself.
Johnny has both positive and negative prideful traits that affect him throughout his life. His pride played a large role in his accident, and benefited him and other people throughout the novel as well. Johnny’s accident was the effect of his pride. Johnny was too proud. He was constantly giving orders and wouldn't take advice from others because he thought he was too good and didn't need it.
