Tristan Mell 4 October 2013 A voice of reason Pride is a human defense that can either save you or break you. Pride can cause a person to do things and act differently than normal. In the crucible by Arthur miller, John Proctor as a result of pride, is full of guilt, becomes stubborn, and is impulsive. Thru ought the play we learn that Proctor is riddled with guilt. After Proctor and Abigail commit lechery, they find themselves alone again and she wants more, Proctor informs her that, “…I will cut off my hand before I‘ll ever reach for you again. Wipe it out of mind…” (Miller 1. 451-52) He vouches never touch Abigail again and tells her to forget about it. For an example take this excerpt when they are having a formal hearing of Mary’s testimony and the girls starts to claim an icy wind, “(without warning or hesitation, Proctor leaps at Abigail and, grabbing her by the hair, pulls her to her feet. She screams in pain. Danforth, astonished, cries, ‘What are you about?’ and Hathorne and Parris call, ‘Take your hands off her!’ and out of it all comes Proctor’s roaring voice.) ‘How do you call heaven! Whore! Whore! ” ( Miller 3. 825-30) He does not think beforehand or consider the outcome, he acts on a whim without any premeditation. Eventually Proctor is also thrown in jail and in due time is convinced to confess to witchcraft, they have him sign a written confession that will justify all of the other higher stature hangings, Proctor realizes this after he has already signed, “( his breast heaving, is eyes staring, Proctor tears the paper and crumples it, and he is weeping in fury, but erect.)”(Miller 4. 739-40) yet again he acts on the spot with no warning or sign what so ever, he tears the confession so they cannot use his name to hang all the other accused, he is then lead away at dawn with no legal confession to hang at the gallows ending the play an a very dark
