Krupa Patel November 13, 2011 Mrs. Wieser Crucible essay We wonder why there are some people out there that make the decisions they do. There were various experiments done where a pair of twins was taken and they were separated into two different environments. One was placed in a stable healthy environment with a family, and good education. The other was placed in a ghetto were the child did not have a family to look after or may have been abused by their guardians. Identical twins have the same DNA so researchers wanted to learn how influence of society affects the choices the child makes in the present as well the future. Community acts as a clique. Everyone wants to fit in they want to be part of the majority. Though not everyone wants to be part of majority some are repelled by the group. In the play write, John Procter is an ordinary man living in Salem, Massachusetts during the time of the Salem trials. John is a married man with kids who made the mistake of getting in bed with Abigail Williams. John knows he had broken one of the ten most important rules of the puritan church, adultery. He knows that what he had done no longer makes him an honorable man in society. During this time period honor was a very important idea. John does not tell anyone about the incident because, he was feared by society. To John the idea of falling in love with a Abigail was not more important than losing his honor. He again stands up for his honor when at the end of the play write; John has made the choice to falsely confess to the act of witchery so that he can be with his family. He is asked to make a written confession, and told this commitment will be hung on the church door. John is infuriated by this idea. The way person acts or talks can tell us what kind of a personality they have. Same way we can learn about a person’s personality through the choices they make. Abigail is an adolescent who seduced her boss John Procter for she falls in love with Procter and longs to be with him. Procter is a married man so, she takes the help of, “a charm to kill goody Procter”(Miller 19). When Betty awakens from her coma Betty is screaming at Abigail about how Abby had drunk a frog’s blood to put a spell on goody Procter. This act is what revels the intensions that Abby has. When Abby screams “or ill bring a pointy reckoning to your throat,” we learn that Abby is the kind of person who goes after what she wants and will go really far to get it, she is manipulative. She has can have any person she wants arrested because she says so. Mary Warren is the present servant to the Proctor’s. She is told by her boss that she is to not go to any of the trials or court. Also Mary was one of the girls who were caught dancing in the woods. Mary was starting to enjoy the liberty that she was giving to her for being part of the girls that have seen the devil. She had begun to talk back to Procter and told him that she surely will not listen to him. Mary was enjoying the power and she wanted to be sure that she had it in hand so she told Elisabeth, Procter’s wife that she had been mentioned in the past court meeting.
