The Crucible and Dante's Seven Deadly Sins In the play The Crucible hundreds of people were falsely accused of witchcraft without any proof, this time period is known as the Salem Witch Trials.. Arthur Miller wrote this play to show how horrific and unfair the Salem Witch Trials were. In this play sins are broken rapidly.. Some of these sins are pride, wrath, lust, envy, sloth and gluttony. Pride is to be very positive about what you have done. Lust is to have a sexual desire or determination toward someone or something. Wrath means revenge on someone for something they did in the past. Envy which is to have a desire to have something another person has and sloth means to have laziness. Also, gluttony means overindulgence of something. The characters that break these sins are Deputy Gov. Danforth, the person sentencing accused witches, Abigail Williams who is a self claimed victim of witchcraft and John Proctor, a well known man who is falsely accused of witchcraft.. Danforth broke the sins of pride and sloth, John Proctor breaks sins of lust and pride and Abigail Williams breaks sins of lust and gluttony. The character Abigail Williams sinned profusely in the play The Crucible. A couple of sins she committed were lust and gluttony. A direct example of Abigail expressing lust is on page 176 “John, I am waitin’ for you every night. I know how you clutched my back behind your house and sweated like a stallion whenever I come near!” This quote shows lust because she had an affair with John Proctor, a married man, and she won’t stop thinking about him. Abigail showed gluttony when she said “I never sold myself! Im a good girl, im a proper girl”(187)! This is an example of the sin gluttony because she is thinking way too much of herself.
