The Clutter Family as a Musical Piece

Oftentimes when a composer begins an orchestration the first things determined are the chords that will be used. From these chords the melody is bass line is directly derived, harmonies are developed, and the melody brings itself to life. Within the Clutter family there were four major components, Mr. Clutter, Mrs. Clutter, Nancy, and Kenyan. Granted, a four piece ensemble doesn’t usually make a major symphonic piece, these four people created the symphony that was their lives. That is, until that symphony was ended by Perry Smith and Dick Hickock. The easiest part of an orchestration to write is the bass line. Although they can be written to stand out, bass lines are often just there for support. They exist to hold the bottom of the chord and provide stability. Within the Clutter family the bass line was Mr. Herbert Clutter. He held that family together through his wife’s illness and Nancy’s scandalous inter-religious relationship. He provided both financial and emotional support and stability for his family, and existed to protect them. Without a bass line a musical piece falls apart. The chords don’t make sense, the rhythm ceases to exist, and by killing Mr. Clutter, Smith and Hickock made it impossible for that family to ever recover, even if they hadn’t killed the rest of the members. The melody of any musical piece is much like the shining star of a television show, or movie, or even a family. It stands out and receives the most attention from the audience. The melody is the most prominent part of the piece and in the case of the Clutter family the melody was represented by Nancy Clutter. Nancy was not only the star of the Clutter family, but she was also the star of Holcomb. She was loved by all and looked up to by many of the younger girls such as Jolene Katz. A musical piece without a melody is just a few notes played in a beat.
