The Captured by Scott Zesh tells the stories of early Texas, the first settlers and the Indians. It give first hand accounts on the hardships endured by the Native Americans and "Whites" alike. In an attempt to uncover his family history the Author discovers his great uncle was a native American captive. He pursues his uncle's story and captives like him and give a voice to their experience that were almost forgotten. He collects and writes down all the information he could gather on the early Texas captives. Zesh well researched and thought provoking book brings a new perceptive to Texas history through the eyes of Native American captives. Scott Zesh, the author of the book was born of German decent. His ancestors lived on and settled Texas land when it was just a frontier. His great grandmother's step brother was kidnapped by the Indians in Texas when he was a young child. His great uncle was forever affected by his time spent with the Indians. Upon his uncles return to his family, he never again slept indoors and later in his life even left his home to live a solitary life in a cave. Scott Zesh, was naturally intrigued by his ancient ancestor and began a search to find out more about his great uncle. He started to ask around and was disappointed to find out that his family didn't recall much about his great uncle. Most of the people who knew him and died and taken their stories with them. There wasn't much to be found on his great uncle so Zesh expanded his search to include other children that were kidnapped by the Indians about the same time in early Texas history. He hoped that the other captives tales could help him gain insight into his great uncles experience and fill the blanks of his story.
