Characters’ Analysis This essay is going to be focused on the description and analysis of the characters in “The Canterville Ghost” and is going to be divided in three parts. In the first part, we are going to introduce the story briefly. Afterwards, the second part is going to deal with the analysis and description of the characters in this story. In order to analyze them, we are going to make a classification according to the order of importance that they have in the story, and finally, a conclusion will be made “The Canterville ghost” is a short story written by Oscar Wilde in the 19th century. This story shows the life of an American bourgeois family who lives in a place where there is a ghost. This ghost appears at night in order to frighten them, but he never gets it, and they always laugh at him. Therefore, one of the most important things in this story is the irony that the author employs making fun of the ghost. On the other hand, another important thing in this story is mystery. We can notice the mystery at the end of the story, for instance, in the final conversation between Virginia and her husband: “…you have never told me what happened to you when you were locked up with the ghost….. than both” (Wilde 1887, 204). In this fragment at the end of the story, we can see that Virginia does not want to tell what really happened with the ghost. Therefore, not telling the truth at the end, the purpose of the author is keeping the mistery and making the reader feel curiosity about what really happened because he wants to create suspense and make the reader want to know what happen after. In this story, we consider Virginia and the ghost as the main characters. However, the most important is the ghost, because the whole story turns around him.
