The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari In The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari , the people in Francis' story are all fictional characters and produced by the condensation of two or more people. For example: Jane, Cesare, and Dr. Caligari. Many of the physical features of these characters are derived from patients and staff at the hospital and they received many traits of people from his past. These fellow patients, who are encountered later at the end of the film, were nothing like Francis' description. Cesare is awake, proving that somnambulism was drawn from another source. Supporting this even further, Cesare was found dead at the end of the fantasy, yet is still alive in the hospital. The character of Dr. Caligari was formed through the condensation of stories Francis had heard about a famous criminal and the director of the mental hospital. in the 1920s, German Expressionism was well established; the art and film world were influenced by the cultural collapse of Germany. Government officials banned foreign films and filmmakers relied on the war to perform as a muse. This film series presents key works that helped to both define and influence this movement. Through the use of asymmetrical camera angles and stylized lighting techniques . in 1914, the Great War began in Europe. Germany was cut off from its supply of international cinema . After the Germans defeat in 1918 Germany sunk into great depression because of the economic crisis which lead to the hyperinflation. German expressionism films became more recognized, as there was more demand for films because people wanted to get their minds off depression - tendency of an artist to distort reality for an emotional effect in the viewer. The emotional effect is the most important, because cameras are becoming more prevalent, and they can depict reality more accurately than any painting, so arts turn to distortion.
