The Buddha of Suburbia Questions on the text 1. Summarize the concrete action af this extract from the novel. In this extract of the novel the author, Hanif Kureishi, decribes the situation when Anwar wants to wed his daughter with an Indian man who was selected by his brother. Anwar informs his daughter that she has to marry an Indian man and that she has to live with him in a flat which would be big enough for a family with two children. Jamila tells Karim the difficult situation but in Karim’s opinion it is naturally that Jamila needn’t do anything what she doesn’t want to do. Karim is in Anwar’s house and he is shocked about Anwar’s hunger strike. Jamila has to obey or he would die. For Jamila there is no way out. In Karims opinion the attitude of Anwar is very old-fashioned. He wants to convince his father’s friend to change his mind, but Anwar is impassive. 2. Characterize Anwar and his daughter Jamila and describe their relationship, supplying concrete examples from the text. Anwar is a long-time friend of Karim’s father. Both came to England in their twenties. Anwar and his wife have a daughter, Jamila, who is the same age like Karim. Anwar represents a more traditional Indian immigrant, who lives the Indian culture and sticks to the old Indian tradition. An example for a traditional acts, that Anwar wants to force his daughter Jamila to marry the man he has chosen for her. She doesn’t agree and Anware goes on a hunger strike to put Jamila under pressure. Anwar’s aim is to have his family under control like a good Indian father. Jamila is one of Karim’s friends from the suburbs. Jamila has lots of problems because her father tries to control her.
