THE BLIND PEDLAR The Blind Pedlar was written by Osbert Sitwel. He has published poems, short stories, novels and memoirs. He ws born in London and was educated at Eton. His poetry collections include Collected Poems and Satires (1931) and Selected Poems (1943). He served as an officer in the army during the First World War in France between 1914 and 1917.His views on the futility of war, following his own experience echo in some of his works. This poem consists of five stanzas. It is narrated through the blind pedlar himself. The pedlar has visual impairment, so he stands alone and sells his wares in the pavement. In first three stanzas he complains about his blindness and curses the day he was born. In the final stanzas he expresses a positive comment about his inability to see the world around him. The poet points out the dehumanising impact of the world war through the blind pedlar.…show more content…
The pedlar grumbles that he stands alone through the day. Though the poet is in the pavement where hundreds of people could be passing him every day, he feels he is left alone because of his blindness. He seems to be a pitiable person because he is not even able to see the wares that he is selling. He expresses his hatred for the day he was born. He says that he has cursed the day he was born that rendered him with blindness. He calls his life a long night for he doesn’t experience any difference between day and night. Everything is dark for him. He says that his peering eyes sought for just a ray of light that could pierce the darkness out of his eyes, so that he could see when the skies Rain down their first sweet April showers on budding branches, and the morning that breaks with the breath of spring and flowers that makes the world
