In just “The Introduction” of the book it tells that Ronald McDonald made his debut on TV in 1963. Shortly after Ronald became the spokesperson for McDonalds everywhere. McDonald sales spiked to a new high. The title of the first chapter is fairly self-explanatory, that being “Fast food may be addictive”. In said chapter, the reader finds quotes such as two by Diane Martindale “Foods that are excessively high in fat and sugar, can cause changes to your brain and body that make it hard to say no.” and “Exposure to fatty foods may quickly reconfigure the body’s hormonal system to want yet more fat.” (Fast Food 12-13).
False advertising is also another unpleasant practice that fast food companies use to lure in costumers. Some of these practices include no warning labels on advertisements like there are on dangerous things like tobacco and confusing labels on food served that lead customers into eating more calories than intended. David Zinczenko advocates that it is some of the fast food companies fault for the decline in America’s general health. At the end, David chooses not to complain about the legalities, but instead encourages us to let the justice system do its work. In the article David Zinczenko discusses “Shouldn't we know better than to eat two meals a day in fast-food restaurants” we the people of America should know by now that it is
According to the American Heart Association the bad fats that many children eat in early childhood may lead to coronary heart disease which is number 1 cause of death among americans (Clay Mcnight). All frozen or pre-heated foods that are served to kids, indeed has advertised by using recognizable symbols such as the two golden arches from McDonald's. A survey of american schoolchildren found that 96 percent of children could identify Ronald Mcdonald (Clay Mcnight). The website “Processed Kids” notes that “one fast food meal can include hundreds of chemical additives”. The food children will eat is not what you will find in an average cookbook.
When eating fast food you are exposed to many addictive ingredients. In this instance: meat, cheese, sugar and caffeine. These ingredients convinced Morgan that he needed to have them. After a point in time he found himself experiencing mood swings with massive headaches, his body was craving the food in order to make him feel better. Morgan said himself that he felt ten times better after he ate his meals.
Because the Food and Drug Administration regulates the claims made about foodstuffs, these companies are forced to be creative and come up with witty advertising techniques. In this advertisement for Oscar Mayer bacon, the advertisers use a specific color scheme, skillfully selected words, and a cleverly orchestrated setting to convince the consumer that Oscar Mayer bacon is delectable and superior. Yellow and red are the two most prominent colors in the advertisement. These colors are commonly associated with hunger and a desire for food in the Western world. A prime example of this color usage is the colors of McDonald’s fast food restaurants.
This responsibility also needs to be the leading factor in the lawsuits that are being filed against fast food companies because of childhood obesity. We are all aware of the health risks associated with eating these kind of meals and although children are left with little choice at times as to what to prepare themselves for breakfast, lunch or dinner, there are healthier alternatives for preparing meals which are also cheaper to purchase than fast food. With all the information available on the Internet, brochures at fast food restaurants and other nutrition tips at these establishments we need to hold ourselves responsible for our health and stop blaming the fast food
The Sugar-Heavy-Low Nutrient Breakfast of Champions Andrea R. Wilkerson PSYCH 500 July 16, 2012 Dr. Jody Pendleton The Sugar-Heavy-Low Nutrient Breakfast of Champions The prevalence of childhood obesity has received increasing attention. Individual physical and psychological health and social and economic development are significantly impacted by personal weight. Recent Decades have seen an increasing prevalence of childhood obesity. Obesity in children is linked to adult obesity and is accompanied by adverse health status (Bouchard, 1997). There is robust science linking exposure to food marketing and poor diet, and in an effort to protect children from food marketing, the public health community has proposed a variety of remedial
While some argued that it is the fault of food industries, and for some, fault of consumers, it can easily be resolved with two words: self-responsibility. Therefore, consumers are definitely the ones responsible for the current epidemic in this country. The first reason why consumers are responsible for America’s obesity epidemic is because consumers are the ones that choose what to eat and feed their children. There are many alternatives to fast food but most people rather not take their time to prepare for a healthier meal. In “The Battle against Fast Food Begins in Home”, author Daniel Weibtraub tries to convince parents to take a stand and fend off obesity in their homes.
After seeing, “Super Size Me,” it has shown me the devastating effects of excessively eating fast food. The documentary shows Morgan Spurlock was made to show the increasing spread of obesity throughout the United States society. Many lawsuits were brought against McDonald’s for increase in obesity. In “Super Size Me”, Places like McDonald’s, Burger King, and Wendy’s also advertise toys that are included in kid’s meals to cause children to want to get those meals rather than something healthier. The increasing spread of obesity has become an epidemic and if Americans do not change their eating habits it will greatly effect the world to come.
The health difficulties also become the importance of families seeking for help as Flood claims 30% of the households have at least one member in poor health, and 35% of adult recipients do not have health insurance, the decision of purchasing food with less nutritional values also causing diabetes and obesity to each household members and children, Flood says, “Poor nutrition is a leading cause of many of the major killers in our society, including heart disease, stroke, diabetes and many types of cancer.”, but it is also causing the food trade is getting more difficult when it focuses on one person’s health. Family members would need to find a job that will help them pay for utilities, food and transportation and even have enough to save for another day. Flood also claims that there has been more fruits and vegetables provided for students during school during lunch hour. Some students that skip breakfast, there has been schools that allow all students in the class eat in the classroom during the morning so they would not need to skip any meals. It is important for everyone to get his or her nutritional values everyday.
