I will tell you why you need to give blood. Each day thousands of people get in wrecks and are rushed to the hospital. Many of those patients need blood to survive. According to the Red Cross, the average red blood cell transfusion is 3 pints; but one car accident victim can require as many as 100 pints. This is why I urge you to get out and give blood. Many of you may be scared of needles or that by giving blood, you’re not helping somebody. It will help tremendously and please consider what I have to say in this speech. The American Red Cross says that more than 44,000 blood donations are needed each day and you can help. Through personal experience, knowledge of the system, and have family members work in hospitals, I’ve learned how vital it is to us as individuals to give blood. Once I explain how we need a sufficient blood supply (or blood banks), the benefits of giving blood, and the blood donation process. Let me explain the need for a sufficient blood supply. Like I said previously, roughly 44,000 blood donations are needed each day and only 38% of Americas population can give blood. Also the shelf life of the donated whole blood is limited to about 42 days. So you can obviously see the need here. The reason why we need to keep up the blood supply sufficient is that some one is going to get hurt and need blood. Also, cancer patients regularly need blood transfusions and the number of cancer patients is rising. Roughly 1 million people are diagnosed with cancer each year and many of them need blood daily. By giving blood you can help save someones life and ensure that our blood supply doesn’t reach a shortage. The second reason why you need to give blood is because it’s very easy and like I’ve said numerous times, it saves lives. With all of the victims from car crashes to other means, they need blood.
