The Berlin blockade and airlift was more to blame than the Marshall plan for increasing cold war tension In this essay I shall explain why Berlin blockade contributed most to the changed relations, but also how the Marshall plan was important. The Marshall plan was created by George Marshall so that Trueman would keep his promise to contain communism. The Marshall plan gave 17 billion dollars to countries who were still recovering from WW1. This created tension because Western Europe could become more prosperous. This angered Stalin as he did not want West Germany to recover and be given Marshall Aid. Marshall Aid made tension worse because it divided Europe further, the west could get richer and the east would go poorer because Stalin would not accept Marshall Aid. The back round of the Berlin Blockade and airlift cause tension because the west wanted Germany to be more prosperous but Stalin wanted Germany and Berlin to be weak. Tension increased because Britain and America joined their zones together creating Bizona. Stalin got angrier when he heard that France joined to create Trizona. Tension increased because Stalin felt there were all ganging up on him and getting ready to attack. More tension increased when the allies introduced a new currency called the deutschmark. This made tension worse because Stalin did not want this new currency, Stalin was angry that West Germany and West Berlin would become more prosperous. Tension rose to the highest point when it was called that West Germany would get Marshall Aid. This caused Tension because Stalin reacted by Blockading West Berlin, it stopped all roads, transport, electricity and gas. 2 million people are cut off from the west.
