The Benefits of Vaccination for Children In recent years, more and more parents have been worried about the safety of vaccines. Even some doctors and scientists think that vaccines are dangerous. However, according to Rubin (2009),”Vaccines are very safe, and side effects are minor—especially when compared with the diseases they are designed to prevent” (p.58). It is obvious that there are many benefits of vaccination for children. Getting vaccinated can protect young children from many childhood diseases. Children do not have strong enough immune systems to prevent themselves from infection diseases; therefore, doctors recommend that parents should give children vaccines to keep them healthy. In the Frontline video, “The vaccine war: the growing debate over vaccine safety”(April, 27 2010), Dr. Wharton explained that 16 childhood diseases have been prevent, such as polio, measles and rubella. Vaccines reduce the rate of mortality among children. Dr. Offit, in the Frontline video, “The vaccine war: the growing debate over vaccine safety” (April, 27 2010), said that because vaccines are used in childhood, life expectancy has increased by 30 years. However, some young children cannot be vaccinated because of some medical reasons. For example, the YouTube video,”60 minutes Australia—getting the point (vaccine debate story)” (2010), reported that Maris Collins’s son had an adverse reaction to his first injection because of allergy. Therefore, these children who cannot be vaccinated should be protected by giving other children vaccines. In this situation, the children with health issues would be less likely to be infected with diseases. In addition, vaccines can help people to control the spread of some diseases which infect children.
