New media is a 21st century term that has been used to define all things related to the Internet. The term is in relation to the old media forms like the print newspapers and magazines. People believe that the new media has some negative effects on students and lead to lower their academic performance. In the academic world, everyone viewed social media as a distraction and destroy to students’ development. According to Steven Pinker’s “Mind over Mass Media”, new media is convenient, timesaving, and allows users to share opinions and communicate with others (2010). I personally believe that the new media, including web sites, e-mail, DVDs, Internet telephony, digital cameras, is a new electronic technology that is beneficial to students. New media is a modern technology that can help college students’ study. First, many professors in the universities always use PowerPoint to assist their teaching. According to Steven Pinker (year), without a PowerPoint employed in classroom, new media will not influence people’s intelligence. I agree with Pinker that PowerPoint can improve the quality of teaching and it can make the studies of college students more efficient. The reason is that the important details of knowledge can be presented clearly on the projectors to the students. Besides, new media will improve the efficiency of finishing homework or assignments. I think that the new media assignments, such as the blogging assignments, podcasting assignments, video assignments, and Web/Wiki assignments are convenient, and may help students become better scientists and deeply thinks.
