Not a man, of course. Back then men were viewed as superior because that’s all they were ever taught. “It takes a lot of dishes and a lot of washing up, for mum to build an athlete” (Fairy Liquid and the Olympics) this reinforces the idea that women do the household chores in service to the males of the house. The implication that housework is purely a woman’s work is completely unacceptable in today’s day and age where women are seen as strong and independent. The unequal distribution of domestic responsibilities has held women back for generations; it still today continues to hinder women’s progression in the work-place.

Women carry out the triple burden in the household; the domestic labour, emotional labour, and paid labour. As shown in the item most of this work is ‘unpaid and hardly recognised work at all’. Oakley argues the only way women will gain independence and freedom in society is for the role of the housewife to be removed aswell as the present structure of the family. Wilmott and Young believed the family is symmetrical and that both husband and wife have joint conjugal roles making the family a functional institution and their research showed that men do help women with housework. Radical feminists such as Dobash and Dobash also disagree with Willmott and Young’s theory that the family is symmetrical.
The industrial revolution had profound effects on American women, because as production shifted from homes to factories, it shifted away from women doing the producing. This led to the “cult of domesticity.” The cult of domesticity decreed that a woman’s place was in the home, so rather than making things the job of women was to enable their husbands to make things, by providing food and a clean living space, but also by providing love, friendship, and mutual obligation. Only very low paying work was available to them and in most states they couldn’t control their own wages it they were married. But, still poor women did find work in factories, as maids, or seamstresses. Some middle class women found work as teachers, which was disreputable
These women either work inside or outside of the home. These women are stressed from having too much to do in too little time. They are searching for better alternatives to saving money, eating healthy, and preparing their food quickly and conveniently. The women are generally homeowners with the exception of those professionals who live in a very populated city such as New York City where apartments are more common. Hello class and Prof. Alan, My heart goes out to Hanneh Hayyeh. Here you have a women who is poor and works very hard for what little money she gets, and appreciates the simple things in life, like having a nice kitchen. All she wants is to have is a little a beauty in her life which is a kitchen painted white, that reminds her of the times he shares with her boss Mr. Preston and it serves as home coming gift for her son from the war. I dislike her husband because of his attitude and lack of support for her dreams. Just because you are poor does not mean you should not have dreams of wanting better things.
Maid to Order: The Politics of Other Women’s Work Luis Erazo Laredo Community College The main focus for Barbara Ehrenreich was on building awareness about the problems associated with females working as maids. Ehrenreich reflects on the sixties and seventies to explain the roots of this issue; when housework was not seen as a job, even though it was supposed to be “the great equalizer of women”. Women were cooking meals, caring for children and doing all sorts of other tasks in order to allow men to focus on their job. Without a paycheck for their house duties, women were made to feel as though they had no real value for the family. Today’s problem stems from companies like Merry Maids that
Living on a single income, with the husband supporting the family on his own sounds wonderful to a lot of women today, when husbands demand their wives work outside of the home. The "Women's Libbers" expect to be thanked, and do not understand why many women resent what they did. Society has changed so much that women may make quite a bit more money than men, and some husbands don't want to work at all. They are happy to be supported by their wives or girlfriends while they stay home and do anything they want to do. Unfortunately, what they want to do apparently does not include childcare or
