INTRODUCTION Canada is a very multicultural country that is rich in diversity, with cities such as Toronto and Montreal even serving as immigrant hot spots upon immigration. However, families who arrive new to Canada can bring with themselves the flavours of their previous native lands in the form of cultural practices, experiences, religion, morale or values. As years go by, these immigrants can either settle into their new surroundings by successfully merging their previous culture with their new Canadian culture; or, they may remain fully intact in their previous culture while adapting or merging at a much slower rate to the new Canadian culture. A major problem with the latter of the two may be that those children who immigrate with their parents, and hold foreign born status, may struggle to conserve the previous culture with the same ease and rate that the parents might – this can lead to parent-child conflicts as explained by Tardif-Williams and Fisher (2009) within the issue of acculturation. Immigrant families who migrate with children and youth are at a higher risk for parent-child conflicts (2009) in comparison to immigrant families whose children are born in Canada, or whom have spent many years in Canada already (2009).
(2011 census) Main Benefits of Ethnicity Having a range of people from different cultures can enrich social integration and cohesion (Social Capital Theory E. Crains, 2006). It can also be benefited from economic productivity e.g. skills more expertise\talents. However this can only be achieved if people accept diversity and the benefits that come with it, as the contrary may provoke conflicts and social division. Social\ Cultural Benefits of Diversity Valuing diversity can be very enriching and creative as accepting diversity may result in a greater range of social skills like learning about different cultures, as these offer new experiences such as different foods and places to visit.
Canadian music reflects Canadian identity in many ways. In Canada there are numerous genres of music that are more popular in Canada than anywhere else, some examples of music genres are: Rock, traditional, native, country, jazz, classical, pop, opera and rap. Many believe that migrating to the US will broaden their career in music because Hollywood is the main location for fame and will open up more opportunities. Many Canadian artists do become popular but many still aren’t known in the US. As I’ve begin to realize is that genres that are more popular in other countries are different than in Canada, which have genres that are more indie and independent like where in other countries they’re popular music is more pop.
The United States of America When we say the word America, we have already imagined a land of freedom and opportunities. Many have different beliefs, views and opinions about the United States of America. Some dislike it and believe it is corrupted, and some come here to start a new life and love what it has to offer. However, despite different opinions and critics, United States of America is one of the greatest countries in the world because it offers people many chances and careers other countries don’t, it gives people an opportunity to grow. One of the most interesting things about this country is its traditions and customs, from the food they eat, to the way they celebrate their holidays, and America wouldn’t be the same without
In today’s society many people are affected by the phenomenon of globalization. For many people of different ethnic back ground, race and religion get very comfortable living in a community where we can relate to the people and environment where there are similar values, backgrounds, views and interest occurs, people flock to areas on the basics of cultural affinity for a feeling of security and similarities. For this reason it is unlikely to find location that has been unaffected by globalization; however globalization is the process of interaction and integration among, companies, government of different nations driven by trade. In “I Just Work Here” by Russell Leigh Sharman and Cheryl Harris Sharman the authors explain the effects globalization has on peoples cultural identity when they described the struggles Alam endured when his left his family in his native Bangladesh. Alam a night shift worker in Penn Station came to the US a place where most people think is “heaven” describes the difficultly living away from
Stearns also suggests that history is what gives a population their identity, stating that “ Merely defining the group in the present pales against the possibility of forming an identity based on a rich past.”(Stearn, Pg.3). Traditions from their pasts is what provides distinction between various cultures around the globe, and being well immersed in them demonstrates an individual’s loyalty and good citizenship. Furthermore, Stearns claims that these “identities” provide mankind with a “database” of itself, providing better
I thought about it and eventually decided that I wanted to focus my paper on “The Battle of Agincourt”. This topic for some reason seemed to be the most interesting and I found myself wanting to know more about it, like what was the significant of this battle, who was involved, were did it take place, and who was the victor. I then began to think about how I would go about getting this information, and keeping in mind that I had to have at least four books as some of my sources in this paper, so I looked at books that were pertaining to Agincourt as well as some books on the entire Hundred Years War, knowing that the battle of Agincourt would be in there. I did this so I could get a better idea of what was going on during this time period. I also will look on the internet for information because I knew I can find some information that would be more relevant and to the point.
One positive aspect of the Canadian tourist segments is their ability to bring new money into the community. The segments contribute to sales, profits, jobs, tax revenues, and income in an area(SOURCE). The most direct effects happen within the primary tourism sectors --accommodation, restaurants, transpor-tation, amusements, and retail trade. However, the segments also impose costs on the residents of tourism destinations, such as increased costs of garbage handling and increased costs of maintaining tourist attrac-tions that have been damaged by excess of the carrying capacity and vandalism(SOURCE). One can talk about opportunity cost when discussing the above and concluding on the economic and societal impact.
Expression of Nationalism Nationalism is a feeling that people have of being loyal to and proud of their country often with the belief that it is better and more important than other countries, or a desire by a large group of people (such as people who share the same history, culture, language, etc.) to form a separate and independent nation of their own. Nationalism can be expressed in a variety of ways and at a variety of levels. The Quebecois and the First Nations of Canada express their nationalism through politics, national days (culture), and language. Quebec independence debates are an example of expression of nationalism.
Even individuals that live in this area see the community as a “transitional community” (Statistics Canada, 2006). Many residents believe that when they become more financial stable, they are deemed to leave to area. As a result, this reformation was designed to encourage diversity and introduce a broader mix of income and tenure to the population (Toronto Community Housing, 2007). It also creates an opportunity for underprivileged children, which constitute 11% of the Regent Park population to live, learn, and work with people from other communities and hopefully experience a higher standard of living (Toronto Community Housing, 2007). In the end, subsidizing such a project has the ultimate goal of
