The Barrier of Harmony Joanna Cornejo Heritage University HUM 305.9W Fall 2010 Summary: In the feature article “Peaceable Realm,” the author, Eric Law (1993), expresses how one is accustomed to certain norms within ethnic culture. He suggests that when one first experiences something rather than what one is use to troubles may spark. Law Makes a very good point by stating that if a person was to understand other cultures besides their own humanity would start understanding each other better. Law suggests that ethnic culture be described as two parts. He clarifies the first part of culture as the part that can be altered without much difficulty. The one that can be described using our five senses. However the immense element is the internal culture. This is the part that we gain knowledge as an adolescent, and is within us. The way we think and why we think that way about certain topics or situations, because of the way internal values interpret certain subjects. An example Law uses himself, he grew up in a Chinese home where chopsticks were the only form of eating your food. His first experience at a french setting he discovered spoons, forks, and knifes instead. At first he didn’t know how to react but he easily adjusted to the new thought. The author lets us know how he quickly accustomed. Demonstrating how quickly an external event can be altered. However he goes on about the internal part not being as simple to adjust. Law expresses that this is because of people sometimes not even knowing when they are disagreeing with each other on the inside. This is why Law expresses that it is important for people to be aware of the person they are inside. That is why we all need to try and understand that everyone is different and thinks differently. So that there can be more harmony and awareness in the world. Response: Not being aware of being
