THE BAD HABIT OF SMOKING Smoking is a very bad and disgusting habit leading the causes of preventable death in the United States killing more than 400,000 people a year (Facts about cigarette smoking). No matter where in America a person goes, cigarettes are easily accessible. Twenty five percent of Americans smoke, paying into the tobacco companies $150 billion dollars they make each year (How much money do tobacco companies make). Smoking is a nasty habit that produces second hand smoke and may cause lung cancer, heart disease, and emphysema. Second hand smoke is produced from the smoke off of a cigarette and the exhaled smoke from a smoker. People that inhale second hand smoke can get the same health problems as smokers, such as lung cancer, heart disease, and emphysema. Smokers don’t think that when they are smoking they are endangering the lives of people around them who have chosen not to smoke. This is very selfish of them. Just because they don’t care about their health does not mean others do not. Cigarettes are the number one cause of cancer related deaths in the United States (Facts about cigarette smoking). Lung cancer is the deadliest form of cancer causing tumors to grow in the lungs. Lung cancer is caused by the tar in tobacco smoke. There are many effects of lung cancer. Some of the worse ones being: shortness of breath, coughing up blood, tiredness, and chest pains (Helen Polaski). Smoking cigarettes can also cause heart disease. Smokers are at a much greater risk of developing a heart related disease than non-smokers. The most commonly known heart disease from smoking is to have a heart attack. Smoking causes blood vessels to become blocked, and without proper blood flow the heart will stop functioning resulting in a heart attack (Heart attack). Smoking may even cause a stroke which is a less severe heart attack, but still dangerous. The
