Faulks shows her to have nervous and obeying characteristics, that lack of eye contact could be seen as devotion and dedication to her husband, or a lack of self-confidence and a dislike of slight confrontation. She is also shown, even though she is the wife of Monsieur Azaire, to be quite low in the ranking of the house hold. When we are first introduced to Isabelle, we only know that her name is Madame Aziare as she is formally introduced by Azaire as ‘My wife’. This makes the reader feel that she is not respected by her husband as he does not even address her with her name. We are also shown this through how little others engage with her in group conversation and how what she says is shot down and many of the male characters in the novel mock her slightly.
Relationship appear to be the main cause of sorrow in both stories. Two stories works where communication and the use of accommodition come into play occur in ‘’ A Secrt Sorrow’’ by Karen Van Der Zee and ‘’ A Sorrowful Woman ‘ by Gail Godwin. The antagonists, Kai and sorrowfull huasband, try to mend there partnes despair because of the women in there, lives. Faye and the sorrowful woman struggle with personnel issues. People will often ask what makes a good or long lasting relationship. In truth there is no one answer, what works for some will not work for others, it’s about finding the balance that suits the both people. At the beginning of a new relationship, the excitement of being in that relationship helps us to not see the things the other person does which may cause annoyance. At this stage in the relationship both parties find themselves faced with everyday realities which means they have to work at the relationship to find and maintain a balance. When couples are faced with life changing events or illnesses the balance changes quickly and they will find themselves in the difficult position of facing their own feelings and fears while trying to support each other.
She is hiding it from her husband because he didn’t let her write anything or do anything, because in Victorian times, women had less opportunity than men. Also women had to listen to what their husbands said as they were the heads of the house. The husband didn’t believe his wife which shows gender role and creates marital problem when he come to know that he was wrong about not believing her and she was mentally
We are social creatures, who need to talk and interact almost as much as we need food and sleep. We need others so much, that we, society, has developed a commitment called, marriage. Marriage assures us of company, even if it’s not always positive or helpful. Unfortunately, some marriages are not the epiphany of support, but instead hold dangers for both members. Only the best marriages improve both people.
Asef Rahman English 10H 10/15/2012 Ethan Frome: a lonely man indeed The novel, Ethan Frome, by Edith Wharton, is a story about Ethan, a man torn between the moral obligations to his wife, Zeena, and his need for a person to love. The author’s use of foreshadowing, metaphors, imagery and motifs vividly convey the overall message that man cannot simply live alone and needs somebody in his life. He has Zeena but he does not converse with her at all. The fact that Starkfield was a depressing place to live did not help his life either. Although Ethan’s overall nature was damaged by the smash up, his time spent in Starkfield had caused his overall melancholy demeanor and left him feeling isolated.
He constantly masks his problems and never deals with them. Sadly, many marriages lack the aspect of communication. In this story, if the couple would have expressed their concerns with one another, there might not have been such “blindness” within their marriage. The wife would recognize and deal with her husband’s self-doubt in regards to her friendship with Robert. Also, if the husband wasn’t using substances every night, he would realize that his underlying problems are not with Robert, but with himself.
Curley’s wife explained to Lennie about being lonely and how difficult it is on her. “’I get lonely… You can talk to people, but I talk to nobody but Curley. Else he gets mad’” [Steinbeck 78]. Curley’s wife never has anyone to talk to; when she gets the chance she often ruins the mood. She did not want Lennie to hurt her, but Lennie is very unpredictable.
She is introduced as a temptress or “looker” but later reveals a deeper character in the novel. Curley’s wife is powerless due to her gender. In the book, women are portrayed as troublemakers and Curley’s wife is defiantly included in this portrayal. She is described as a “tart”, “bitch”, and a “tramp”. The workers speak of her, basically, as Curley’s problem that needs to stay at home away from the other workers.
Curley’s wife lived not only through the sexiest society which rejected her but her husband did not love her at all making her become “… a tart… with the eye,”(Steinbeck14). That is the image that the men have of Curley’s wife because they are ignorant and do not understand that all she is searching for is to have someone to talk to. Curley’s wife’s loneliness led her to have a bad image with the men on the ranch but also made her seek for attention in anybody she did not matter who. For example she would talk to Candy, and old lifeless man, Crooks who is a Negro that is physically disabled, and Lennie who is a huge man that is mentally retarded. She became mean too since she was lonely and the men rejected her.
