The institution of marriage can be considered as the vital state of human life cycle. It is not just a couple living together under one roof, but it is more than that and a bit more complex. But not all relationship ends with marriage, yet marriage is supposed to be the beginning of the relationship. In my opinion, marriage is the state when we face the utmost challenge in life. How someone deals with his or her conflict in the relationship. Some thoughts perceive the challenges can be one way to fill up the emptiness in life. Meaning to say the conflicts or challenges can be element of dealing with emptiness. The two short stories “Cat in the Rain” and “The Force of Circumstance” have the element of loneliness especially shown by the wives or women and how they deal with it. A little bit about human psychological theory by Abraham Maslow, who created the human hierarchy of needs. After physiological need and safety needs being fulfilled, the need of belonging or love comes on the third level. Here the needs of socializing which involve human emotional aspect such as friendship, family and sexual intimacy. The absent of this need one might suffers from loneliness, social anxiety and communication breakdown. There was a saying “A happy marriage is a long conversation which always seems too short” which I found that rather true. Briefly looking at the first story “Cat in the Rain”, a short conversation seems insufficient to the wife as she was desperately trying to develop conversation with her husband, but the husband didn’t even show any warmth in his expression. Although the husband did interact with his wife, yet he did not really bother of what he was saying. Once the wife said something that requires personal reflection, the husband seems like avoiding the conversation. Here shows that the wife is lonely in term of communication.
