From the opening pages, McCarthy depicts the love and protection the father has for his son as they continue their impossible journey. McCarthy successfully depicts this relationship’s growth, while writing the same high standards for despair that he is most known for. Through the “dark and the cold of the night he’d reach out to touch the child sleeping beside him” (3). In just the first sentence, McCarthy manages to outline the entire story. In a world that God has abandoned, where the sun no longer shines through the ashes, the hope that the father and his son will survive ultimately gives the reader something to look forward to.
Even though the brother seemed to be well off he was filled with a lot of demons just like Sonny. The fact that he was away from Sonny for so long hurt him. It was obvious that he wanted the best for his brother. This is why he rejected the blues for so long. He did not have a understanding of it.

Diaz fronts his novel with a poem by Derek Walcott, Nobel Prize-winning Caribbean writer. The poem’s last lines, “…either I’m nobody or I’m a nation,” could be poor Oscar’s epitaph. His family abandoned, his son not even knowing what he was like had to ask his neighbors. A comment was made to his wife about missing him and she replied, “I already have. Missing him all these years.” (Goodman 398) It is important for a man to have balance in his life. Men can get so engulfed into their work that they forget to enjoy their life and before they know it, it’s over. Phil had a heart attack because he was so stressed out from work, and he didn’t have a life outside of work so he was always stressed out.

In this case it makes Odysseus want to come home even quicker. Statement of point 2: Odysseus’ wife and son are back at home, and their house is filled with suitors for his wife.
