The Arena The short story "The Arena" is a sad story about a family father, who has been exposed to a lot of pain in his former life as a father figure. Children are a joyful affair definitely the most precious thing that you achieve as a parent, therefore also the hardest love to live without. How is it possible to continue living with the loss of the most precious treasure in your life, and feeling that the loss might had been prevented. This pain is tearing him apart and makes him fade away from his ongoing life. The narrator is trapped between the present and the past, until the ending of the story. The narrator has something to settle with the past. These problems are the core in the text "The Arena" written by Martin Golan in 2008. The short story takes place in two worlds the past and the present. Both places are in or near the suburbs of New Jersey. "It's a circular, roughly built structure of steel and cinder block that houses an ice-skating rink hugged by bleachers to sit on as the skaters twirl and spin." (p. 1. l.3-4). Here the Arena is described, and the impression the reader gets of the Arena is a rough and cold place. The Arena is also described as a place which is too cold and too hot at the same time this contrast is an indication of the main characters stage of confusion. The story features this main character, who is the first person narrator, who guide us through the story in the present and the past. He is father to an unnamed boy and currently married to a also unnamed wife. Through the narrators mind the reader is also introduced to his former adopted child and wife. The former son is called Willie and he is the only person who got a name of the six persons in the text.
