Money and material things do not truly satisfy a person's life or make a person happy. Tom Walker had all the money in the world and he was still a stingy cheap miserable old man. Not thinking through choices in life can cause a lifetime of regret and Tom Walker is a great example of someone whose life was ruined by his bad choices. The sad part of this story is by the time he fully understands that his choices were wrong it was too late. He didn’t think about those choices in his earlier years when he was robbing people blind.
Changez’ failed persistence to fit in and adopt the American culture causes him to waste many years of his life as an outsider. Likewise, it is only Jim’s willingness to change to causes him to gain acceptance in the American culture, although it is clear that he too is an outcast in his own unique way. Erica is consumed by her nostalgic past, and chooses to distance herself from society in order to live in her nostalgic past. While Changez works tirelessly to be accepted as an American, he is only ever recognised as an outsider. Changez’ continual determination shows us that he is never accepted by those around him.
Having no other place to go, he joins the army. The war experience changes him and he loses his naivety, but keeps his determination and gains insight into the nature of humanity. Richi is a very bright, talented and ambitious boy, who had set on a career as a writer. Unfortunately, he is doomed by poverty. College takes a great deal of money, and he did not have the money.
In his autobiographical story, This Boy's Life, Tobias Wolff discusses the journey that both he and his mother went through searching for financial stability and a peaceful life. On this journey Tobias is left with no positive male influence, which not only causes him to develop several behavioral problems, but makes the past have a long-term impact on his life. As hard as it may be, Tobias is forced to grow up at a young age, and alone, which is something he must face. Through his journey of adolescence, Tobias seems to show signs of emotional and behavioral disorders, which were caused by not having any rules or regulations to follow. To try to avoid the harsh realities of his past, Tobias develops many different distinct personalities at various points.
One of the major reasons for Holden’s depression is failing at many different things. Holden does not have any close friends to talk to and has a very hard time establishing long term relationships. Another cause for his depression is the death of his younger brother Allie, he has always thought that the world would have been better off if he had died instead of his brother. There are many reasons for Holden’s depression including multiple failures, having very few friends, and the death of his younger brother Allie. A large portion of Holden’s depression comes from failing multiple times.
The qualities that the diction and dialogue bring out in Sammy are ultimately what indicate a transition beginning to take place in his life. Sammy is in his last year of being a teenager and displays extremely immature qualities, the worst of them all being his impulsivity. Sammy quits his job not in some heroic effort to right a social wrong or even because he dislikes his job, but because he wants to impress three strangers who will probably never think of the act again. Sammy quickly realizes that prioritizing females over a job was probably the wrong decision when he is outside of his former place of work “[feeling] how hard the world would be to [him] hereafter.” Once he has stepped out of A & P, he has not just stepped outside, but into another part of his life: adult hood. This transition for the painfully obviously unprepared Sammy is uncomfortable to watch unfold because the reader knows that he is doomed based off of his mindset and
People who lost their jobs could not feed themselves, pay their rent, and support their family. This forced families together in crowded houses or apartments. People couldn't afford to separate or get divorced because they needed the income of everyone to pay the rent. Men who lost their jobs often felt ashamed of themselves. Stephenie Stevenson Christine Warrington ENG 202 NA 5 November 2013 The story Metamorphosis, demonstrates how we allow every day life to over take us to the point that we change into something that we are unable to identify. Gregror did everything for everyone, but nothing for himself. He didn’t enjoy life because he was too busy working at a job that he hated in order to pay off his parents debts and to take care of the household; while they did nothing to help or to show him any appreciation. This story also show how one can give their all and when they are in need of help those that he or she helped along the way will turn their backs with no regard to you. While I was reading, “Metamorphosis”, it made me view life in a different way, and made me come to a decision of taking time out for myself in order to enjoy every essence of being me, and not neglect myself.
