The Affects on Human’s and the Environment Katrina Doughty Everest University September 2011 Air pollution consists of gases and fine particles. Each type of air pollution has different effects upon the environment and human health. Air pollution affects are many, and they may be really harmful. Three factors determine the levels of air pollution are the amount of pollutants entering the air, the amount of space into which the pollutants are dispersed, and the mechanisms that remove pollutants from the air. Sulfur dioxide is a noticeable component in the atmosphere. Sulfur dioxide is a major air pollutant and has significant impacts upon human health. About 99% of the sulfur dioxide in the air comes from human sources. The main sources in the air are industrial activity that processes material that contains sulfur such as coal, oil, or gas. Sulfur dioxide affect human’s health when it is breathed in. It irritates the throat, nose, and airways which cause us to cough, start wheezing, or have shortness of breath. The effects are felt very quickly. Most people feel the worse symptoms about 10 to 15 minutes after breathing it in. High concentrations of sulfur dioxide can result in breathing problems with asthmatic children and adults who are active outdoors. With longer term exposure could include respiratory illness, alterations in the lungs defenses, and aggravation of existing cardiovascular disease. Sulfur dioxide is a precursor of acid rain, which has acidified soils, lakes and streams, accelerated corrosion of buildings and monuments, and reduced visibility which effect the environment. Nitrogen oxide is a group of gases made up of different oxygen and nitrogen. Major sources of nitrogen oxide include fuel combustion in power plants and automobiles and processes used in chemical plants. Nitrogen oxide is formed when
