Ewing 09/17/2012 The Advent of the Cell Phone The device known as the cell phone has become one of the most popular portable electronic gadgets in modern times. Currently, the cell phone has become a multi-purpose instrument that is used in almost every aspect of our daily lives and interactions. Discussed herein will be the technological evolution of cell phones and the multi-practical applications that have made cell phones an intricate part of our lives. Throughout history, the means of communication has drastically changed society, and the way we communicate has taken on new forms as people seek instant communication. Since the beginning of recorded history, humans have had the desire to communicate and exchange information. The ancient Homo sapiens are a prime example of this, using paintings on walls to communicate and share knowledge (James E. McClellan III and Harold Dorn, p12). Likewise, carving on stones and tablets was the progression to writing on parchment. The inkwell and quill were forerunner to the pen. The telegraph, being the next progression in society’s desire to communicate faster (in real time), made communication over great distances easier. With the invention of the television, radio, and telephone, real time communication became the norm. As technology advanced, real time situations throughout the world became instantaneously reported, or broadcasted. For example, the bombing of Pearl Harbor on Sunday, December 7th, 1941 brought the United States into World War II. The assassination of President John F.
