The Importance of Choosing Verbal Communication Over Emerging Media Edward Martinez COM 156 University Communication and Composition II August, 4th, 2012 Holly Callendar The teenager’s of today are becoming passionate readers and creative writers. Unfortunately, there reading and writing pertains to text messages.... A recent survey performed by Nielsen found that “American teens from 13-17 years old sent an average of 3,364 texts per month.” (Nielsen Wire, article “Kids Today: How the Class of 2011 Engages with Media, June 8, 2011) The American poet Audre Lorde said…“I have come to believe over and over again that what is most important to me must be spoken, made verbal and shared”. There is nothing more powerful than the spoken word. New media has taken human culture to an extremely intricate and interrelated level, while simultaneously challenging the very essence of traditional communication. . The inconsistent character of new media has changed traditional cultural grammar and themes resulting in the loss of traditional cultural common sense. Most of the language that is used in communication as a result of new media tools, such as, e-mail or texting, has caused holes in communication between among diverse cultural and ethnic groups, consequently, effecting traditional grammar resulting in a loss of traditional common sense. Since the time that man began to speak, verbal communication has been the most effective and familiar form of communication. A traditional form of communication like verbal communication, either over phone, video chat or in person, is more effectual, personal, and less likely to be misunderstood. The average person can verbalize there sentiments much easier, allowing them to better communicate their point. When we are communicating verbally, we have the ability to judge a person’s emotional state
