In the 21st century, most of us are dependent on our gadgets or the internet on a daily basis. Technology has advanced in the speed of light over the last thirty years. While many details of technology are open for discussion with regards to whether it is good or bad, one thing that is a rising concern is the 24/7, always available nature of information and communication technology. As it is vital for us to discuss the issue of constant accessibility through technology in order for us to understand the pros and cons, this essay aims to address the impact of information and communication technology by discussing the advantages and disadvantages of 24/7 connectivity in terms of work, personal relationships and society. Firstly, in terms of workplace environment, technology advancements have undoubtedly been an advantage as they have blurred the limitations between home and work, where work can be anytime, anywhere. Many organizations are under a common assumption that greater productivity can be attained by allowing their employees to be connected at all times because it allows a smaller workforce to be efficient as more work can be done outside of the office. Moreover, employees can also benefit from this arrangement as constant access to work related matters provides employees the freedom and flexibility to work from anywhere they want, whenever their schedule allows, which utilizes the time spent on long commutes to be used for work so that they will be available for personal life events or family obligations. According to research conducted and published in "digital future", 74% of respondents said they can do more in less time with technology (Cole, 2013) This implies that technology has brought more flexibility and time saving.
