The Advantages and Disadvantages of Online Learning Professor Greene May 26th 2012 The Advantage and Disadvantages of Online Learning One of the biggest advantages of online learning is flexibility. I have tried both campus and online learning and online meets my needs best currently. Since I have a full time job and other priorities keeping up with a campus schedule became hard for me. This is when I made the decision to transition to online learning. Since I am able to attend my courses anytime and anywhere it makes it a lot easier to keep up with the assignments. Most of the students who attend courses online are undergraduates and generally older and more likely to be working and have families. Students are able to take courses based on their own schedules. Also it is easier to communicate with your instructors through online chats and emails oppose to waiting for offices hours that may not be convenient for you. Another advantage of online learning is you get immediate feedback from your instructors. Online learning also offers a wide variety of approaches to learning that accommodate a large variety of learners and learning styles. Although some programs may be more suitable to classroom instruction, online learning can also provide great education. The popularity of online learning is increasing. For the past six years according to “The Sloan Consortium” online enrollment has been growing substantially faster than overall higher education enrollments” (Seaman, 2012). Since online learning can provide ways for people to attend school who don’t have college or universities in their area, it is becoming more popular. More than one in four college and university students now take online classes of academic professionals rated online education courses as the same or superior to face to face instruction.
