Thanksgiving Day Thanksgiving Day is traditionally a day for families and friends to get together to enjoy a special meal. As the name says, this day is clearly about giving thanks of what we have, or at least was like this at the beginning. Nowadays, parades are held in some cities and towns on or around Thanksgiving Day and some people have a four-day weekend. As I mentioned before special meal is prepared this day. This meal most of the time includes roasted or oven-cooked turkey with corn bread and sage (salvia). It is generally accompanied with blueberry and cranberry jelly, sweet potatoes and vegetables as beans. There is also a big variety of desserts, namely pumpkin pudding, apple pudding and walnut pudding. Every year massive parades are made in different states of USA, for instance Detroit, Philadelphia and Manhattan to mention some of them. The most famous example is the Macy´s Parade held every year on the streets of Manhattan, New York and attracts million people to the Broadway Avenue to see the enormous balloons and the presentations of some invited artists. Even though Thanksgiving started being a reflection date, nowadays it is a commercial date. Thanksgiving is known as the beginning of the Christmas shopping season because of the proximity to this date. Most of the stores and offices are closed during the whole weekend. Nevertheless, there are some bars and restaurants that are opened. As a said before most stores are close, that is the case of government offices, schools and other organizations are closed on Thanksgiving day. Many of these allow their employees to have a four-day weekend. Public transport do not operate as usually and as can be expected people tend to travel to other cities, so this date is one of the busiest periods in USA.
