Our family is all dressed up, and I can smell the evening’s food rooms away and hear the ending sounds of the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade on the TV downstairs. We seem like a classic, cookie-cutter family. And then the holiday really begins. My grandma is usually the first to arrive, complete with her leopard-print duffle bag she carried everywhere with her. After her I hear the front door open again and know that, from this point on, the house won’t have another moment of silence.
Thanksgiving As the leaves fall onto the ground, it is so warm outside. It is warm enough to get a family outside and start cooking a big meal. Thanksgiving is a special holiday that happens every fall. When families hang out, they usually occupy themselves with food, games, and football. My family either watches a football game or play football in the yard.
The weather may be cold and gloomy but the spirit of the people during Christmas overcomes the climate with their cheerfulness and their bright happy hearts! 5. During the era of dickens’ day, Christmas had a deeper meaning; people coming together despite their poor ways of living and uniting as a community and family to celebrate in their best clothes
I wore my big jacket and warms boots on the days it would snow. Being with my grandma was so nice. I missed her voice so much. I love seeing my great grandma sitting in her rocking chair. I would wake up to the smell off bacon and pancakes and kittens playing with my hair.
During the celebration, the family will tell (as every year) the same stories about the family; laughers, mockeries, craziness and caring are all part of the celebration passing this legacy to the next generation. It is not hard to accept the idea that in order to balance our lives we need to share our personality between individualism and family. According with Ellen Goodman’s essay “Thanksgiving”, individuals travel from different parts of the country to meet their family in order to celebrate this holiday and share the true love, caring, and security that family can offer. She mentions that Americans love their individualism, but also respect the values of family. However, they have to affront their inside battles among the “I” and “we”, the freedom and solitariness, and the individual and family.
It is very easy for one to see when the Halloween season arrives, on the number of pumpkins that supermarkets have for sale, spider webs, skeletons, scary carved pumpkins, ghostly figures, bats and black cats are all part of the spooky decorations that go along with the Halloween theme. The decorations of Halloween are designed with the intention to scare people. However, the decorations of Christmas such as ornaments, lights, poinsettias, presents, Christmas trees, reindeers and sleighs are those who bring a sense of joy, happiness and peace to oneself. Similar with decorations, the 31st of October and 25th of December both have their signature colors that one can identify the celebration with. The colors that pop out during Halloween are orange and black.
It has artificial grass and trees with building all over the model train layout so when the model train moves all over the display it has a similar experience like its real life when it goes to cities. Towns in this city have green vegetation and buildings that have old pictures of the different trains from the first century. In the center of the building they have an old brown 19th century piano which volunteers of the committee play during the holidays. When Christmas songs are played people will sit down and eat snacks while they listing to songs. Overall, The Texas Transportation Museum was a good experience.
As I entered the streets of Old Town Heidelberg, with its buildings made of cut stone, on either side, forming narrow streets of cobblestones arranged in intricate patterns, I felt as if I had been transported in time to the “Middle Ages.” Walking down the streets, snow gently falling to the ground like feathers, I stared in wonderment at the medieval structures all around me. I couldn’t help but get a feeling of awe; how different this was than anything I had ever seen, or anywhere I had ever been before. Every so often, I would pass a tavern, typically with a large sign hanging in front usually displaying some sort of animal such as a boar, or a stag, reminiscent of the days of yore when the average person couldn’t read or write; thusly the name of the establishment was displayed in imagery. The smells of roasting meats were wafting out onto the streets as I passed. I could hear the sounds of people inside laughing and toasting one another.
It really was quite exquisite though, the sight of children having snowball fights. There was always that feeling of complete childishness that came from having a snowball fight. Who knew if it was from the feeling of cold, melting ice down your clothes, or if it was from the feeling of superiority over all your mates after you had claimed victory? Whichever was the cause, it was a glorious feeling, that which I enjoyed immensely. When I got home around five in that afternoon, I was greeted by the smokey smell of chestnuts over the open fire, the mixture of spicy incense and aromatic cigar smoke, and the anticipated Christmas Eve lamb.
What about using old scarves, foam balls wrapped in yarn, edible herbs, or felt balls to make your Christmas wreath this year? As for garlands, they can be used to adorn every corner of your home, from staircase railings to mantels, chair backs, windows, and front doors. Centerpieces Christmas tables should be both functional and beautiful, so, opt for a centerpiece that matches the table setting, complements, and beautifies it. You can use virtually everything to make a unique centerpiece, from flowers to pinecones and fir branches to ornaments and candles to mini wreaths and trees to candies, just unleash your creativity. The centerpiece is the focal point of the table, however, try to not overdo it and make it too overwhelming.
