Edgar Allen Poe once said that, “and this maiden she lived with no other thought, than to love and be loved by me.” Blue October also said that “you take away the old, show me the new and I feel like I can fly when I stand next to you.” In Poe’s poem ‘Annabel Lee’ and Blue October’s ‘Calling You’ are both free verse and ballad poems which expresses their love to a certain someone. In Annabel Lee, he uses images from nature such as the sea “It was many and many a year ago, in a kingdom by the sea.” ‘Calling You’ uses sound effects in the words that Blue October told his story by rhymes “if you’re dreamin’ are you dreamin’ of me, I can’t believe you actually picked…me.” The poem Annabel Lee used some figurative language comparing angels and demons, heaven and hell, “and neither the angels in heaven above, nor the demons down under the sea.” In ‘Annabel Lee’, the speakers’ language is very sincere and certain about his relationship and his love for Annabel Lee, giving the poem mixed feelings; “with a love that the winged seraph of heaven coveted her and me.” While in the poem ‘Calling You’ the speaker seems to be a little desperate and insecure about himself; “I can’t believe you actually picked…me.” The speaker makes that point clear, because of the repetition of the quote throughout the poem. The speaker does feel desperate, because he is trying too hard to make her happy; “well expect me to be calling you to see, if you’re ok when I’m not around asking if you love me? I love the way you make it sound calling you to see, do I try too hard to make you smile to make a smile.” Edgar Allen Poe’s ‘Annabel Lee’, tries to understand the situation on why everyone is trying to break them apart. It says in the poem “so that her highborn kinsman came and bore her away from me, to shut her up in a sepulcher.” The speaker in this poem tries to make them see that their love will
