ENGINEERING STUDENTS OF DON BOSCO TECHNICAL COLLEGE-MANDALUYONG CITY CHAPTER I The Problem and Its Background Introduction Theoretical Framework Conceptual Framework Statement of the Problem The study assessed the effects of text messaging on the English proficiency of the Freshmen Engineering students of Don Bosco Technical College-Mandaluyong City, SY 2010-2011. Specifically, the study attempted to answer the following questions: 1. What is performance of the student-respondents in English 2? 2. Is there a difference between the texting and non-texting students in terms of their performance in English 2? 3. Does texting affect the English proficiency of the student respondents? Hypothesis of the Study Objectives of the Study The study aimed to: 1. help the students improve and develop their written and oral English communication; 2. expose the teachers on the effects of text messaging on the performance of the students and for them to design a plan to deal with it; and 3. guide the administrators on identifying ways and means to deal with the present trend. Significance of the study The researchers believed that this study will be of great help to the teachers, students, and school administrators as well. By identifying the effects of text messaging on the performance of the students, the teachers can use appropriate teaching methods that focus on grammar and spelling as well as classroom activities they may improve the students’ communicative competence. The result of this study may also give the school administrators insights on how to improve the English 2 program as well as provide trainings and seminars for teachers on teaching the rudiments of English language, and further
