The county was founded in December of 1836 and is named after John Richardson Harris, an early settler. Harris County is bordered by Montgomery County to the north, Liberty County northeast, Chambers County east, Galveston County southeast, Brazoria County south, Fort Bend County southwest and Waller County to the northwest. “TMC is at the forefront of advancing life sciences” (Robbins MD & McKeon, n.d.). Since TMC opened in 1945 it has been pioneering patient care, research, education and prevention (Robbins, MD & McKeon, n.d.). TMC includes 21 renowned hospitals, 13 support organizations, 8 academic and research institutions, six nursing programs, three public health organizations, three medical schools, two pharmacy schools, two universities and one dental school. The medical center has 7.2 million visits per year which is more than population of Los Angeles, Houston and San Francisco combined. TMC houses 7,000 patient beds, delivers about 1 baby every 20 minutes and performs about 171,000 surgeries annually. According to the organizations’ website, the Texas Medical Center has performed more heart surgeries than anyone else in the world including the first successful heart transplant. Harris County has a robust economy and unemployment is low. The energy and medical industries are constantly growing. Harris County has come to expect severe inclement weather every year. Sometimes, this develops into a natural disaster. Because of the “regulatory” of these natural disasters there are multiple response and evacuation plans in place. It is a place where people come from all over the world for medical treatment. Harris County has a large county public health system for community members and homeless. Issues that need improving upon are air quality, improving health insurance coverage for residents, decreasing the need for basic assistance and decreasing the mortality rate of heart disease by providing education and improving the knowledge of risk factors and importance of preventative
