Operations Management: Tesco Metro V.S London Zoo 1. Introduction During past few decades, the importance of operations management has been increasingly recognised by business organisations since the effectiveness and efficiency of business operations would directly influence the performance of organisations (Wild, 2002). In this sense, operation management can be considered as a critical source of competitive advantage and significant efforts have been made to find out how the effectiveness of operation management can be improved (Wild, 2002). Based on a visit to Tesco Metro, this report would firstly give a brief introduction to the operation of Tesco Metro by describing its facilities, processes, layout, and flow. After that, the characteristics of the operation in terms of input, output, and 4Vs, will be discussed. Meanwhile, the importance of different performance objectives for the operation will be explored. Followed by that, the impact of operations characteristics on the quality performance will be illustrated. In the second part of the report, the operations of London Zoo will be compared and contrasted with the operations of Tesco Metro. Finally, a brief conclusion will be provided to summarise the main points discussed in the report. 1.1 The Operation of Tesco Metro Based on the observation, a number of facilities have been identified from the operation of Tesco Metro. More specifically, the store size of the Tesco Metro is about 10,000 SQ FT and it has two levels. There are 14 checkouts available in store and there are another 10 self-checkout machines installed in a separate area near to the exit. Tobacco products are sold independently in another counter.
