Temperate Forest Summary Bio 101 September 15, 2014 Temperate Forest Summary There are various types of forest set within planet earth, which are complex ecosystems with dynamic characteristics that are set by specific features: physiological variations, the form of plant and animal life and the process that initiate these dynamics. Temperate forest biomes are ecosystems that consist of an abundant amount of plant and animal species. The following passage will provide a brief summary of the various characteristics of the forest, geographical areas of forest locations, population growth, and how the forest regulates its population. Temperate forests are several regions in the Eastern part of North America, Western Europe, China, Korea, Japan, Australia, and a small part of South America. A temperate forest experience all four season although climate is moderate in comparison to tundra and taiga forests. Temperatures of these temperate forests are normally in between -22°Fahrenheit and 86°Fahrenheit, with a yearly average of about 50°Fahrenheit. The summers are hot and wet and the winters are freezing due to the location of these forests. Due to the higher latitudes the occurrences of freezing temperatures are common, which requires life of plants and animals to develop adaptive characteristics. The forest is filled with wild habitat such as reptiles, animals, insects and trees. Most trees in a temperate forest are deciduous, which means the tree loses its leaves their leaves in the winter. Examples of deciduous trees in temperate forest are maple, hickory, oak, or beech. White-Tailed Deer is the largest plant-eating animals in the forest and largest mammal is a temperate forest is the Black Bear. According to Marietta College Department of Biology and Environmental Science (n.d.), “the biggest threat to the forest population is development and agriculture.”
