The Good in the Bad Television (TV) has been a topic of discussion for years, whether it is good or bad. Many critics argue that watching television is not only unhealthy for the body and mind, but also claim that it is violent and vulgar. What is claimed to be “bad for you” changes every day. There is not a substantial amount of evidence as to why television is terrible. Television is not so bad, there are multiple programs that are educational, relaxing, and also have intense structural stories similar to a story in a book. Movie critic Dana Stevens argues that TV does not make a person smarter. Stevens does not give a substantial amount of evidence to argue that TV is bad. Today’s television programs contain story lines with complex plots, intense characters, and morals expressed throughout the program. Watching a television show is similar to reading an enjoyable book, because a TV show is the actual picture someone paints in their mind while reading a book. For example, author Steven Johnson points out the hit TV show The Sopranos having more than 20 recurring characters with a noticeable increase in narrative complexity, in his article Watching TV Makes You Smarter. Connecting with characters in a TV show makes it seamless for society to continuously watch such programs. Television shows are not only entertaining for the mind, because there are some shows that are educational for adults and children today. Besides the complex story lines that adults enjoy keeping up with, children can also find the good in television. Preschool children who watch a few hours a week of educational programming perform better on achievement tests over time than their peers who watch more general entertainment shows, according to researchers at the University of Texas in Austin (Center for Media Literacy).
