Drug use in teens is a big problem, but a preventable one. Drugs being abused are both legal and illegal. there also are many side effects or problems with use of drugs. even though drugs are a big problem with teens there are many ways for parents to prevent teen drug use. Teenagers abuse a lot of drugs, both legal and illegal. Legal drugs include alcohol, prescribed medications, inhalants and over the counter cough, cold, sleep, and diet medications. The most commonly used illegal drugs are marijuana, stimulants like cocaine, crack, and speed, LSD, PCP, opiates, heroin, and designer drugs like ecstasy. The use of illegal drugs is increasing, especially among young teens. The average age people usually first try marijuana is 14, and alcohol use can start before age 12. The use of marijuana and alcohol in high school has become more common. Drug use is associated with many negative consequences. One consequence is increased risk of serious drug use later in life. School failure, and poor judgment are more problems. Risk for accidents, violence, unplanned and unsafe sex are also problems related to drug use. Parents can do a lot to prevent kids from taking drugs. Parents can prevent their children from using drugs simply by talking to them about drugs. Open communication and role modeling is another method parents can use. Finally, promoting responsible behavior, and recognizing problems can help prevent drug use. Teen drug use is a very serious problem. There is a huge variety of drugs that teenagers can easily get their hands on. Taking these drugs effects teens in many ways.
