Drinking is an inevitable side effect of the college life, but statistics show that the problem arises from the fact that most students don’t drink safely, but rather partake in binge drinking. Approximately 4 out of 5 students drink alcohol, while half of this population participates in binge drinking.   Binge drinking causes a number of problems to arise from sexual abuse and assault to death and suicide attempts.1 It appears that the University should not be looking to restrict drinking in general, but rather should seek out ways to prevent binge drinking from occurring. College students will drink no matter what, but binge drinking is something that can hopefully be reduced, in order to lead to a safer environment.
According to recent research, the rate of regular drinking has remained stable, while the rate of binge drinking has increased dramatically.   Furthermore, the data also shows that “students who binge one or two times during a 2-week period are nearly three times as likely as non–binge drinkers to experience a blackout, have unprotected or unplanned sex, destroy property, suffer an injury, do poorly in school, have a run-in with the police or drive after consuming alcohol”.2   The Harvard School of Public Health conducted research on binge drinking, and actually came up with a 12 step solution to help reduce the rate of binge drinking on campus. Their plan relies heavily on the fact that the administration needs to accept the idea that alcohol is a problem on their campus, and assess the scope of the problem by having administrators take unannounced campus tours through dorms, fraternities, and local bars around the area.   The information gathered from these tours, should then be used to work with businesses around the area to ensure that the legal drinking age is being enforced and help reduce the supply of alcohol to college students.
