00605787 Writing 121, Group #30 September 12, 2008 Teenagers and the Binge Drinking Issue Almost every time you flick on a news channel you can watch for less than fifteen minutes and see at least one story about a drinking related arrest or crime. The laws are getting stricter and stricter nowadays making the consequences of having a beer as an underage person significantly larger than ever before. Throughout history, alcohol has been used frequently, in positive and in negative ways. Nowadays, unless the topic is wine tasting, the majority of alcohol related news is the negatives about people binging, and alcohol related crimes and violence. Citizens of the U.S. need to rid themselves of these dogmatic laws and create a new set of laws. The only thing that Reagan’s 1984 National Minimum Drinking Age Act has accomplished is forcing the drinking right underground. Unfortunately, the federal government has state governments blackmailed, because if they allow the drinking age to lower, the states federal highway funding will be cut. These laws are actually a consistent source of revenue for the government. Government knows that people are going to break these laws, and hope to catch every single criminal, and nail them for every court fee, fine, probation fee, and as much bail as they can dish out. Sadly, this seems to be the criminal justice’s answer to the government’s shortage on money. As adults, we need to unite, and rid ourselves of these crooked politicians and government officials. There is no strong argument against an eighteen year old drinking age. In a country where all our core democratic values, revolve around freedom, this law is not acceptable for 18 year olds adults. Americans of all ages must recognize this as a true overstepping of bounds by government, and take action to retake one of our most basic unalienable rights as adult citizens of the United States of…show more content…
