Teen Suicide Teenage suicide is very common in the United States. A number of factors associated with the risk of suicide including: mental illness drug addiction and socio-economic factors. “Others adolescents have substance abuse problems, which can be a contributing factor in suicide cases,” (Marcovitz 3). While external circumstances, such as a traumatic event, may trigger suicide it does not seem to be an independent cause. Thus suicides are more likely occur during periods of socio-economic, familiar and individual crisis. In the United States involve the use of firearms. Substance abuse is the second most common cause of suicide after mood disorders. Both chronic substance misuse as well as acute substance abuse is associated with an increased risk of suicide. Teen suicide is a very real problem in the United States. With many pressures and a variety emotional, social and family issue to confront, many teenagers find themselves having suicidal thoughts. Part of preventing a teen suicide is being involved in your teen’s life and watching for teen suicide warning signs. It is also important to note that many of the teen suicide warning signs are also signs of depression. There are some things that teens might do that could indicate that they are contemplating, are even planning, suicide. “ for many people, the news that a friend or family member has taken his or her own life does not come as a surprise to them,”(Marcovitz 3). It is important that you make yourself aware of these actions, and use them as starting points to draw your teenager out and perhaps express what is bothering him or her. Studies show that four out of five teen suicide attempts have been preceded by clear warnings signs, make sure you know them. Teen suicide is a major cause of death among teens, though many do not recognize suicide as a serious threat to a teenager’s well
