Using new terms has been quite a trend among the teens in Singapore. Most of these terms like LOL, LMAO and ROFL originate from the gaming fraternity. For example, “but then I took an arrow to the knee” comes from a popular role-playing video game, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. It basically means that someone is no longer able to do something. Some may find teen lingo easy to understand, but there are also others who disagree. So, is teen lingo actually beneficial for the society? I personally believe that it is not beneficial for the society. Firstly, one minus of teen lingo is that it separates two groups of people – people who understand teen lingo and people who do not. Using teen lingo creates a sense of solidarity among the like-minded as much as it shuts out those who do not understand it. For example, gamers who use those terms will be able to understand each other, but those who are not gamers will not be able to understand what the gamers are trying to say. Secondly, teen lingo also clearly distinguishes the generation gap between the older and the younger generation. Parents are unable to understand what their children speak. A real-life example would be Mohammed Nizam Elmi, 42, an aircraft engineer, father of 4 children. Confused by some of the terms his children use, he tells them that it is fine to use them in front of their friends, but they should not use it in front of their younger siblings and older relatives. Thirdly, using teen lingo might cause the younger generation to speak worse English as the teens are their ‘role models’. The wide usage of teen lingo may cause the younger generation to be confused between proper language and the use of slang in English.
