Technology Saves Lives

Think about how much technology is around the world today. Practically everything we do involves some sort of technology. We go to school or work everyday using a car, listening to the radio. We go home and watch television. We text and email our friends and family to keep in touch. Basic communication and everyday functions would all be impossible without new technology. There are several examples of places that technology is necessary and beneficial, but one place technology is especially critical is in a hospital. In this environment, people’s lives are saved using all sorts of amazing inventions. Although many people believe that new technology is hurting our society, it’s actually saving our lives in many ways. In an interview conducted at Akron Children’s Hospital, many new things were learned. The interview was done with Kathy Stoner (my mother), a nurse manager on 7200, the infant and toddler unit at Akron Children’s. She is a Registered Nurse and has been for 29 years. She has worked as a night shift nurse, day shift nurse, in the burn center, and most recently as a nurse manager. Throughout her long career, she has seen technology grow and develop into one of the most helpful and critical things about her job. She says without technology, her job would be very difficult and it would make saving lives everyday, impossible. Upon entering Akron Children’s Hospital one instantly gets a good feeling. It is a modern, safe, and welcoming environment. Everything a hospital is supposed to be, right? When walking through the first floor and the main lobby, several things stand out involving technology. Doctor’s and nurses all have a pager or some sort of device that allows them to be contacted 24/7. The main desks are filled with computers and phones.
