The Technology of Wal-Mart Wal-Mart is the largest retailer in the world. There are over 2.2 million people who work for the company around the globe. The Wal-Mart corporation has higher revenues than any other company in the world. Part of the success of Wal-Mart can be attributed to the development of new technologies that were specifically designed for the company. Another aspect that allowed Wal-Mart to stay ahead of the competition is the way the management keeps the way Wal-Mart operates a secret. There are several questions that need to be answered that can help you understand why Wal-Mart has been able to gain success and stay on top. The first question is: what technology does Wal-Mart requires partners to use to track and coordinate inventory? The most defining technology Wal-Mart uses is RFID. RFID technology tracks and coordinates the inventory in a store (Gallaugher, 2013). These devices can also schedule shipments, determine what inventory needs to be in a shipment, and manage orders and purchasing. RFID technology allows for Wal-Mart to easily prepare all aspects of the shipping process, so goods are able to be sent from distribution centers to stores at a much faster rate. This allows for stores to get the goods needed before the rest of the inventory is sold-out. Another type of technology Wal-Mart uses is data mining. Data mining is the computer assisted process of digging through and analyzing enormous sets of data and then extracting the meaning of data (Alexander, 2011). Data mining is the best way to share information that pertains to the purchases that are made from a company. This type of technology allows management to see what products are in highest demand. Data mining also allows for stores to easily keep track of what products need to be restocked. This reduces the amount of errors on stocking that can cost the
