These and other new “consumer” technologies unquestionably have eased the lives of millions of people in many ways. New technology, however, has not been restricted to consumer items. Industry also has seen its share of advances with effects that have devastated the lives of millions of workers. Benefits Personal computers have helped to lessen the negative impact of job loss. If someone loses a job in a factory or office, the option is now widely available to use the computer to work from home in a variety of positions ranging from merchandising to data entry. For secretaries, accuracy in typing was once an essential job requirement. Thanks to the editing abilities of modern word processing programs, making a few mistakes in typing is not the end of the world as long as the secretary proofreads the documents and corrects the mistakes before sending the information to other workers in the company Technology loses job The computer eliminated many pieces of equipment that were once essential in offices across the world, such as the typewriter . typewriters are very rarely used in most offices. Traffic lights replaced traffic cops Computer terminals with network connections replaced librarians Computers replaced accountants People fear from change People are generally fearful of change. Change that involve new and complex technologies are especially stressful, particularly to older and less educated workers. They are fearful of losing their jobs, of losing control to machines, and of becoming useless.
