Andrea Lazatin IV – St. Monica Technology in the Classroom To say that man’s level of intellect separates him from and above animals is a gross understatement. In fact, it is this intellect that defines man as a being above even comparison to other living creatures. Consequentially, it can be said that technology, when used as an aid in learning, does much more than educate the human individual – it also transcends him closer to his being. A being never complacent with his achievements is the epitome of man. He strives to attain more. Once, he tried to reach the clouds. After discovering how simple this was, he decided to reach for space. All of this happened in less than a hundred years. It is this lack of contentment with his world that drives him to further his race. The acquisition of knowledge allows him to fulfill his purpose as a rational animal. With better technology in his classroom, learning is made more effective. Man’s thinking becomes more efficient. There is no higher task, no greater achievement for man, than for him to fulfill his predefined purpose. “The world is a small place.” is a well-known cliché. Today, information can literally travel at the speed of light with the use of fiber optic cables. Information then, can no longer travel any faster, but learning can. This is done by the assistance of appropriate educational technology. It is to be noted that the word assistance was used. This is to assert that technology is not education, but a means to attaining it with greater productivity. Technology however, cannot substitute for methods of instruction. It may cram large amounts of information onto one PowerPoint slide, but let us not deceive ourselves. The truth has always been that cramming never works.
