Technology and Health Care Health Care Organizations and Delivery Systems—HCS/531 September 9, 2013 Dr. Rachael Kehoe Technology and Health Care Health care communication covers “the study and use of communication strategies to inform and influence individual and community decisions that enhance health” (Piotrow, Kincaid, Rimon, II, 1997, p. 2). The need for information exchange is critical in the health care industry. Patients and caregivers should form a strong partnership to ensure meaningful communication. Patients should have several ways to communicate openly with their health care team. Those who actively participate in their treatment choices promote their own patient safety. In an effort to cultivate better communication, health care organizations are adopting new technologies that will enable patients and caregivers to convey information in an effective, efficient, and convenient way. This paper highlights how an iPhone application is changing the way health care providers at Sarasota Memorial Hospital communicate and share information with patients. Necessity for New Technology The objective is to cultivate improved communication among patients and physicians through methods such as brief messages, text messaging, or calling rather than scheduling an appointment. “For patients, efficient health communication can increase awareness of health risks; provide the motivation and skills necessary to lower these risks; help them find support from other people in similar situations; and influence or reinforce attitudes” (Piotrow, et al., 1997, p. 2). “One of the major challenges in the design of efficient health care communication programs is identifying the most advantageous contexts, channels, content, and reason that will prompt people to listen and use health information" (Macios, 2009, para. 2).
