ASSIGNMENT: Team Observations Assignment Details & Grading Rubric Total points: 100 (10% of final grade) Assignment Details: To further appreciate the dynamics of teams, you will spend at minimum of 45 minutes observing a team and writing a reflective memo on your observations. This team could be a sports team, a team working in a specific industry (i.e. a service team in a fast food restaurant, etc.). Choose a team that you can observe easily and without obstruction (to their work). You will want to take notes on: • How many people are in the team and what is the make up of the team (gender, age, other demographic variables)? • What types of interactions & communications do you see them having with each other? • What roles or types of hierarchy do you see in the team? • What do norms do you see enacted by the team? • What stages of team development do you see apparent? • What resources do the team use/need to accomplish their goal? • How effective is the team in accomplishing their goals? • Other general observations of the team and their process. Paper Details Your paper (3-4 double spaced pages, 12 pt font) should include the following: • A description of the team you observed and the setting in which you observed them • Imagine that you were hired as a consultant for the team you observed, detail: o What did you see the team doing particularly well? o What do you think motivates the team members to perform and what else could be done to help motivate them even more? o What could the team do to function more effectively? (Specifically use the TELM model from Chapter 10 as a framework for making suggestions) o Using the Job Characteristics model (from chapter 11), describe how team members would rate on each of the job characteristics of: skill variety, task identity, and task significance and describe any possible job redesign
