TEAM SKILLS TEAM LEARNING Working on a high-performing team is a very rewarding experience and can lead to the creation of remarkable results. The experience is rewarding when we learn from others, form friendships and close bonds, and when we create together what no one could create by themselves. Remarkable results can be the outcome of the team experience when we individually and collectively create an environment for this to happen. Working on a team can also be a less rewarding experience where these conditions are not created. The purpose of this guide is to assist team members in recognizing some of the characteristics of a high performing team and how to personally help make your team a high performing team. Definitions A useful definition of Learning is as follows: Learning is the process of increasing my capacity to take effective action / to create my own desired future. This definition identifies learning as both a process and an outcome. The outcome is increased capacity to do something I want to do. It is a "useful" definition because it implies that we can be in the process of learning in many different ways. Whatever assists you in increasing your capacity to take effective action is a learning opportunity. If we take advantage of the opportunity, we are in a learning process. A useful definition of Team Learning is as follows: Team learning is the process of increasing individual and collective capacity to take effective action / to create the desired future of the team. This definition identifies team learning as both a process and an outcome. The outcomes are increased capacity of individuals to take effective action in a team environment and a collective capacity to create the desired future the team desires.
