Questions on Unit One RESUBMISSION 1. a) Summarise Entitlement and Provision for Early Years Education Under the Children’s Act 2006 and Every Child Matters agenda provision is made for all 3 & 4 year olds to be entitled to free education of 15 hours per week for 38 weeks per year. Additional hours may be charged for. Early Years Education is provided by Nurseries which may be attached to or independent from a school. Nurseries may be run privately or by the Local Authority. Education is based around the principle of learning through play and children work both with adults and independently, self-selecting activities allowing development of autonomy in the child, allowing the child to think for themselves. Early Years Curriculum Frameworks vary by country within the United Kingdom. * England – Foundation Curriculum applies from 3 to 5 years old thus covering children in Nurseries and in Reception Classes. * Wales – applicable from 3 to 7 years old thus combining Early Years Foundation and Key Stage 1 curriculum * Scotland – The Curriculum for Excellence sets out the philosophy for all children’s education from 3 to 18 years old. The curriculum for 3-4 year olds combines with the early primary phase, Primary 1, and only when a child s ready will they progress to Primary 1. * Northern Ireland – the years are counted differently than in England where Years 1 and 2 are covered by Foundation Stage (Nursery / Reception in England). Key Stage 1 is counted as Years 3 and 4, Key Stage 2 as Years 5, 6 and 7.
